Reform Angst Leads 60 Percent of Consumers to Oppose Abolition of the Age-Old Salt Monopoly -
Feb 1, 2010 - 12:30:19 PM
In December 2009, a major debate about reforming the salt monopoly
system started, reaching as far up as the administration and the salt
industry, and as far down as the general consumer. It originated in a
statement made at a meeting on Salt Reform by Chen Guowei, a Supervisor
on the Enterprise Supervision board of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC): “To break the state’s
monopoly, reform of China’s salt monopoly system needs to be sped up.
But China Salt Industry Corporation is strongly opposed to this market
reform.” In his speech, Chen Guowei directly China Salt’s
monopoly over the production and circulation of salt.

From Ruling by Rhetoric to Ruling by Secret Police -
Jan 27, 2010 - 5:02:39 AM
I was left rather shocked by the many stories in the current (21
January) issue of Nanfang Zhoumo [Southern Weekend] that reflect a
prosperous China's many long and short-term worries.
Coverage of the disaster in Haiti was accompanied not only by “Haiti’s
sad history”, but also by stories of Chinese illegal immigrants to the
US via Haiti, dubbed “human snakes.” The experiences of the Haitian
people and Chinese illegal immigrants are thought-provoking and show
how the man-made disasters of greed and evil are the real reasons
bringing about a hell on earth.

On 17 January, when many people thought that Google was irretrievably
on its way out of China, reports appeared on the Internet of a possible
turnaround. [1] Appearing simultaneously with it were an interview on
“Voice of America” with the US ambassador to China, Jon Huntsman: “We
should focus on the overall situation in Sino-US relations” [2], and
“Internet users' sentiment reversed—70% of Chinese believe that Google
was politically manipulated.”

Implications of the Attorney Li Zhuang Case -
Jan 19, 2010 - 6:08:14 AM
The implications of last week’s sentencing of Li Zhuang were quite
profound. In terms of intellectual-led public opinion, Bo Xilai won the
case but in moral terms lost. He clearly manipulated the case,
unscrupulously framing Li, and his contempt for the concept of the rule
of law in particular outraged many legal and otherwise knowledgeable
people, damaging his liberal image, and doing his political future no
good.
