The population policy in Mao Zedong's era was "more people have more power". But in 1980's, in despite of the Chinese traditional culture and countryside custom, China began its strict One Family One Child population control policy and caused many family tragedies.

There were only one male for three generations in my family. My father had a younger brother but he died during the war, so my family is a martyr family. I only have two sisters but no brothers. That was why my parents hoped they could have a grandson after I married. Although I began to work in the city replacing my father and accepted the modern idea that son and daughter are equal, my parents hope I could have a son when I had my first girl baby.

My wife was pregnant again soon. Because she lived together with my parent in the countryside, nobody in my unit knew about that. But one day I was arranged to have a several days' business trip. It was strange that the trip had nothing to do with my work (I worked mainly as an electrical engineer), but I could not refuse the work appointed by higher leader in my unit at that time. I could not expect that just during my trip the tragedy happened in my family.

It seemed that the local Family Plan officer in my village tried to ask my wife to go to hospital to have a medical abortion when they knew she was pregnant and would have a second baby but they could not persuade my parents to agree. My family is a big clan in our village and is also a martyr family, the local officer for Family Plan dared not to force my wife to the hospital for abortion as they had treated other families. They notified the CDP leader and Family Plan officer in my unit because they did want lose chances to climb higher and had little bonus at the end of the year.

The policy in my unit was same. If there were people against the Family Plan, the leaders would be punished if they could not prevent the workers from having more children. So they took first step to send me out for business trip and then cheated my wife to come to my unit and sent her directly to the hospital for abortion. My wife did not agree. The Family Plan officer threatened that if she agreed to abort, I could join the CDP and become a leader of the Labor Union; otherwise I would be fired from the unit immediately and back to countryside.  In 1980's, the social gap between city and village were so large that my wife had to accept the abortion against her will. But after the physical examination, the hospital doctor refused the suggestion because my wife was 8 months pregnant and the fetus was ready for natural birth soon. The abortion was too late and could harm the mother seriously and the aborted baby could be possibly alive!  Although hesitating, my wife was sent to surgical room insisted by the CDP officers from my unit.

The abortion was not smooth. Several hours later, a son was born 2 months in advance by the medical abortion. The Family Plan officers thought that he would die during the abortion but the desire to live defeated the inhuman policy. Life wined the cruel system.

My wife was happy to know about that but the next day she was told that the baby was dead due to abortion. My wife was caused severe blooding and lost her work ability and could only feel well by continuing to have medicines till today.

I was so angry when I knew about that after I came back from the business trip. The CCP officer in my factory wanted to comfort me by offering a chance to become official in the future, asked me not to break the Family Plan Policy, and prepared the application letter of Communist Party for me. I could become a CCP member if I agreed to sign the application letter. I ripped the application letter into pieces. I could not become a CCP member and then become a cadre just by losing my son's life. Thence I was willing to work as a electrical engineer and did not wish to join this barbarous and cruel Party. Later The Tian Anmen Massacre of cracking down the students' democratic movement happened and I was grateful that I made a decision not to associate with murderers.

We did not believe that the baby was dead in the second day when he was born alive. The only reason should be that the hospital refused to nurse him. We tried to get news from a friend who worked in that hospital that the leaders of both hospital and my unit did not know how to deal with this baby. If hospital refused to nurse and caused the baby to die, the hospital should assume responsibility. If the baby kept alive after abortion, the leader of my unit would be punished by higher officials. Later one countryside woman whose newly born baby was dead asked if she could adopt this baby. There was no "yes or no" answer from the hospital and she nestled the baby who was crying and ran away. The hospital kept the information of this woman secretly and did not allow us to find the baby and made more trouble.

Now I am in USA and read Chinese news of removing organs from human being for sale and know other barbarous treatment of family plan policy in other villages. Some people from cities do not believe these news. The tragedy happed 20 years ago in my family can be a witness: The tyrannical party, which gained the power by violence, can do anything bad to safeguard their own interests!
